Arts
Brookgreen Gardens
One of the most beautiful places on the planet adds to its aesthetics in 2020 with a display of the works of renowned artist Bruce Munro. The botanical sculpture garden will serve as a scenic backdrop for his Southern Light show Wednesday-Saturday evenings, April 8-Sept. 12.
Grand Strand Arts Trail
This recently created 60-mile stretch along the Carolina coastline highlights local hot spots for the arts. Running from Calabash, N.C., down to Georgetown, S.C., the trail has more than 20 stops at popular studios, museums and eateries that support the local arts community.
Myrtle Beach Art Museum
The best deal in town is only a short walk from Compass Cove – the Myrtle Beach Art Museum. Admission is free and the exhibits, both permanent and touring, are amazing. “Birds of Paradise” is one of three on display through April, with a full schedule of upcoming events in 2020.
Attractions
Ripley’s Aquarium
This Broadway at the Beach fixture is undergoing a major expansion in 2020 for the addition of the Penguin Playhouse. The 5,500 square foot addition will house several species of penguins, which will swim, waddle and swarm around patrons inside the glass viewing tube.
Big Air Trampoline Park
Ready to grab some air? This national chain of trampoline parks brings its high-flying fun to Myrtle Beach this summer with a safe and spacious playroom. Kids can take part in acrobatics, gymnastics, obstacle courses and other activities in a safe, climate-controlled environment.
Edventure Myrtle Beach
This educational-based attraction opened in 2019, but many Compass Cove annual guests will get their first look at its new exhibits. Displays introduce children to scientific concepts through hands-on experience. Edventure offers activities for toddlers to pre-teens.
Events & Festivals
Carolina Country Music Fest
The stage is set for the sixth annual country music showcase, and this year’s lineup looks bigger and better than ever for the June 4-7 hoedown. Headliners Darius Rucker, Eric Church, Luke Combs and Jake Owen close the show each night in the heart of Myrtle Beach’s downtown district.
Myrtle Beach Boardwalk
The 1 1/2-mile Boardwalk celebrates its 10th anniversary this year with lots of special events planned to commemorate the popular attraction. The Hot Summer Nights Festival, Myrtle Beach Seafood Festival, Sun Fun Festival, CCMF and Holidays on the Boardwalk are among the 2020 parties.
Outdoors
Huntington Beach State Park
After a fire destroyed the old nature center at this state park in Murrells Inlet, a new state-of-the-art facility is under construction and slated for completion in the spring of 2020. An observation deck offers excellent vistas for birding and photography, while the indoors will feature live animal displays.
Thunderbird Park
The Market Common has added even more outdoor recreational opportunities for bikers and hikers with the opening of the Thunderbird Park. Named after the A-10 fighter planes once stationed at the defunct Myrtle Beach Air Force Base, Thunderbird Park features three miles of trails, bike racks and a tire-changing station.
Restaurants & Bars
Brew-a-Palooza
The brew-pub fad has hit Myrtle Beach, with at least four new ones opening in 2020. Crooked Hammock Brewery, which features a large beer garden with backyard games, opens in Barefoot Landing in the spring, while Grand Strand Brewing, Twelve 33 Distillery and Tidal Creek Brewhouse are also in the works.
Broadway at the Beach
After celebrating its 25th anniversary, Broadway at the Beach is undergoing a major makeover in the food and beverage department. Gone is Liberty Steakhouse & Brewery (relocated to 77th Avenue North) and Key West Grill (closed), replaced by several new restaurants that are on the way. Bar Louie, Extreme Pizza and Melt are among the first new venues to open their doors.
Sea Captain’s House
After nearly 75 years of operation on the Myrtle Beach oceanfront, this institution is undergoing major renovations in 2020. The restaurant will expand to offer more seating and ocean views, and a new bar in the Chart Room and sushi bar are among the other additions.
Shopping
Gateway Galleria
The mixed-use facility is under construction with plans to open in 2020, with a variety of shopping, dining, lodging and entertainment outlets in the works, Gateway Galleria, located at 7th Avenue North and Ocean Boulevard. will feature a beach lifestyle theme.
Myrtle Beach Mall
Formerly known as Briarcliff Mall, this shopping center is about to undergo a transformation to a multi-purpose entertainment hub. The District, a $150 million upgrade, will see the addition of restaurants, bars and more shopping on the Intracoastal Waterway.
