At Compass Cove Resort, we believe the best measure of our success isn’t found in the number of pools we offer or even the prime oceanfront views; it’s in the stories our guests carry home with them. For decades, families have chosen Compass Cove not just as a place to stay, but as the backdrop for their most cherished memories. And while our recent multi-million-dollar renovation has made the resort better than ever, it’s these personal stories that truly capture the heart of Compass Cove.
Two families, in particular, reflect what makes Compass Cove such a beloved Myrtle Beach destination.
For Tom and Joyce Hart, Compass Cove Resort isn’t just a vacation spot. It’s the setting of a lifetime of memories. Their family’s connection to the resort dates back to the 1970s, when Tom’s parents first began vacationing in Myrtle Beach. That tradition has since grown into an annual reunion of more than 35 close friends and relatives, a group Tom and Joyce fondly refer to as their “Myrtle Beach family.”
Tom and Joyce’s first visit to Swamp Fox (now known as Compass Cove) was in 1993, when Joyce was pregnant with their twin daughters. They have returned every year since, first in September and now later in August, bringing their growing family along and booking multiple rooms to accommodate everyone. One of their favorite memories is of their daughter at age two, playing on the Schooner pool deck. Just recently, Tom recreated that moment with his granddaughter in the same spot, bringing the family tradition full circle.
Over the years, the group has built its own traditions, like a big beach family reunion cookout on the pool deck, and large pizza parties that bring everyone together on other nights. “We’re like family. Our kids have grown up, gotten married, and we’ve all been there for the weddings,” Tom noted. “We visit each other’s homes throughout the year, but no matter what, we all come together at Compass Cove.” Tom and Joyce’s grandchildren, now ranging in age from four years to four months, represent the newest generation of Compass Cove guests.
What keeps them coming back isn’t just the oceanfront views or family-friendly amenities. It’s the sense of connection. The group has formed lasting friendships with both other guests and the Compass Cove staff. Familiar names like Elijah from security, who has since passed away, Jennifer—Elijah’s niece—and Nicole from food service, as well as retired manager Paul Maltese, are all part of their story. They also fondly remember Phil Wehrung, who helped coordinate their group’s reservations for many years. Phil, who also passed away, always brought a personal touch that made their stay feel seamless. His kindness and attention are still deeply appreciated and remembered.
As they prepare for their next visit, scheduled for their yearly August trip, the Harts and their Myrtle Beach family are looking forward to making new memories while honoring a tradition that has lasted across generations at Compass Cove.
For James and Janet Kiener of Pickerington, Ohio, Compass Cove Resort isn’t just a vacation destination; it’s a part of their family’s legacy. What began over 45 years ago as a getaway during the early days of the resort, when it was affectionately known as the “Swamp Fox” has blossomed into a cherished annual tradition spanning three generations.
Each year, the Kieners make the trip from just outside Columbus to Myrtle Beach, often joined by their two adult sons and, when schedules allow, their four grandchildren—some of whom are currently in college. Even as life gets busier, they do their best to keep the tradition going strong. In their most recent visits, the Kieners have been especially impressed by how the resort has evolved. “The rooms have always been really good. They recently went through a remodel, and I think that’s why our last visit stood out—the staff is always incredibly friendly, too,” noted Janet. From the newly remodeled guest rooms to the upgraded common areas, the improvements have only strengthened their loyalty to the resort.
The beachfront access remains a favorite, along with the resort’s many pools that offer something for everyone, from kids to grandparents. The Kieners enjoy being within walking distance of local favorites like the Springmaid Pier, which adds a sense of adventure to each stay. A hearty breakfast with long-time staff is a beloved part of their routine, thanks to the warm, familiar service that makes them feel right at home. They appreciate the wide variety of room options, which makes accommodating their family easy and comfortable. “We love having dinner at the Crow’s Nest on our first night.” Janet shared. “Our sons used to enjoy the Crow’s Nest at night when they were in their 20s, so it’s fun to keep that connection going. And during the day, the poolside entertainment is always a highlight—it really adds to the atmosphere.”
As their family continues to grow and change, one thing stays the same: Compass Cove is where they reconnect each year. This year’s trip will be even more special, as Janet’s sister will be joining them, adding another layer to their decades-long tradition. With their next visit planned for this month, September 2025, the Kieners are already looking forward to another chapter in their Compass Cove story, now in a beautifully updated setting that honors its past while embracing the future.
For the Kieners, Compass Cove is where three generations gather. For the Harts, it’s where lifelong friendships deepen year after year. And for so many others, it’s where family, fun, and tradition collide with ocean breezes and unforgettable memories.
With our recent multi-million-dollar renovation, the resort you know and love is now better than ever, offering upgraded rooms and amenities while holding onto the same warmth and tradition that have kept families coming back for decades.
