After a day spent sunning yourself on the sand, it’s often fun to go out for an evening of entertainment. Fortunately, Myrtle Beach offers up a plethora of amazing shows, so many you could go to something different every night of the week! But one favorite show that people come back for year after year has been going strong in Myrtle Beach for nearly 30 years: The Carolina Opry.
Way back in 1986, Calvin Gilmore, who had been signed to a Nashville record contract, was looking for a solution that would allow him to continue to play music, but would also let him spend time with his young family. He found the solution by renovating a nightclub in Surfside Beach, S.C., and starting a music and variety show.
The show was a hit.
Over time, the Carolina Opry grew, continuing to sell out, until Gilmore opened his own theater on the north end of Myrtle Beach, where the Carolina Opry now puts on some of the most popular shows on the grand strand night after night, year after year.
The Carolina Opry is the centerpiece show, and features a cast of dozens of comedians, singers and dancers. The show includes everything from gospel music to Broadway to rock and, of course, country, but it also includes family-friendly comedy that every member of the family will enjoy.
During the months of November and December, the entire theater is transformed into a cozy winterscape, and the show gets re-worked into a Christmas spectacular that some families come back to enjoy every single year.
Another great show at the theater is Good Vibrations, a fun romp through your favorite popular tunes from the 60s, 70s and 80s and brings them to life again.
The theater is located about a 20-minute drive from Compass Cove Resort. Get more information about shows and purchase tickets at www.thecarolinaopry.com
